Alfredo was like a child in a candy shop. He had arrived at his all time favourite castle and the sun was out, the sky was blue and it wasn’t raining. He was in heaven. All he had to do was get all of the castle into his Canon camera!

Meanwhile, the other tourists were doing the same … in their droves. Some even paying the fee to get in the gate and over the bridge to the island itself. Not our brave Italian hero. He just walked past the dozing attendant and got his shot in the can (well did apologise on the way back through).

We are just back from Skye and having watched Monty and his dog, Reuben in South Uist on telly you do miss the place; rain and wind included. Monty had just been to visit St Kilda, forty-one miles off the coast of the Outer Hebrides. Like many before him had fallen for the island, even after only being there less than a day. Hats off to him for making the crossing in a Rib boat with no shelter from the elements (even if the BBC camera crew were next to him).

Because that’s the day is called the Sabbath in this neck of the woods and you’re not meant to enjoy yourself.

They’ve only just allowed you to get here on a Sunday, as up to six months ago you had to swim across or land by parachute. But that would be enjoying yourself too so I’m sure you would have been met by a welcoming party from the Kirk Elders.

I realised that when people came to Skye, had travelled for hundreds of miles and reached this farthest westerly point, they just had to leave something and I suppose it’s better than pieces of paper stuck in wall.

Yes, it’s official. The North Pole is not covered in snow and ice but is in a sunny forest not far from Fearns. But where is Fearns? Well you drive for five hours from Glasgow or Edinburgh heading northwest, taking care to avoid the deer, the badgers, the weasels and all the pot holes on the way. You then come to Sconser on the Isle of Skye but only if you are driving at under 30mph. Faster than that and after 7pm you’ll go miss the ferry and you’ll need to go back or return the next day. Pay the Ferry Man his £5.35 for the return ticket and then sit down for 20mins and enjoy the view. Once on the other side, walk for an hour or so over the dismantled Iron Works railway and come to a forest gate. Go through the gate, turn left and head along a quiet rhododendron covered lane. Soon you will come to a T-junction and the sign. The best bit is that you will hear only birds, bees and the breeze.

Sometimes you take a photograph and it just works on so many levels. It was Easter, just before the hordes from the mainland arrived and this was the site that greeted us after breakfast. Absolute peace with not a body in sight. Just think a week later you wouldn’t be able to see the sand. Or hear yourself think. Or breathe the air without the smell of chips, beer or overcooked bodies. As a beach shot it is simple and was taken quickly. If the sun loungers weren’t there then it would have failed and I know the clouds make the difference too.

This image is currently being used by a German Travel company to promote it’s holidays in Majorca. I hope they tell their holiday makers to get up early to see this view.
